Predicting Encounter Rates for Zooplankton: A Model Assuming a Cylindrical Encounter Field

چکیده

To eat and not be eaten: optimal foraging behaviour in suspension feeding copepods.
Zooplankton feed on microscopic prey that they either entrain in a feeding current or encounter as they cruise through the water. They generate fluid disturbances as they feed and move, thus elevating their risk of being detected and encountered by predators. Different feeding modes generate different hydrodynamic signals to predators and different predator encounter speeds but may also differ ...
متن کاملSwimming behaviour of Daphnia clones: differentiation through predator infochemicals
Various characteristics of population and community dynamics of freshwater zooplankton have been studied in the past, in attempts to increase our knowledge of how freshwater ecosystems function. A major leap forward in disentangling ecosystem processes was the discovery of communication based on chemical cues (infochemicals) in the early 1980s. Infochemicals were found to affect many aspects of...
متن کاملThe predatory behavior of Mesocyclops edax: Predator preferences, prey defenses, and starvation-induced changes1
The predatory behavior of field-collected Mesocyclops edax on four different kinds of prey was compared under similar and different predator starvation regimes. Unstarved Mesocyclaps did not consume either the ciliate Rhabdostyla or the cladoceran Bosmina. Increasing starvation in the predator increased the probability of ingestion after encounter for both of these prey. The rotifer Asplanchna ...
متن کاملTime-Dependent Hygro-Thermal Creep Analysis of Pressurized FGM Rotating Thick Cylindrical Shells Subjected to Uniform Magnetic Field
Time-dependent creep analysis is presented for the calculation of stresses and displacements of axisymmetric thick-walled cylindrical pressure vessels made of functionally graded material (FGM). For the purpose of time-dependent stress analysis in an FGM pressure vessel, material creep behavior and the solutions of the stresses at a time equal to zero (i.e. the initial stress state) are needed....
متن کاملThe use of mechanistic descriptions of algal growth and zooplankton grazing in an estuarine eutrophication model
A simple model of estuarine eutrophication is built on biomechanical (or mechanistic) descriptions of a number of the key ecological processes in estuaries. Mechanistically described processes include the nutrient uptake and light capture of planktonic and benthic autotrophs, and the encounter rates of planktonic predators and prey. Other more complex processes, such as sediment biogeochemistry...
